Verbalperiphrastic is a term used in linguistics to describe verb forms produced by periphrasis—combinations of auxiliary verbs with nonfinite verb forms—instead of inflectional morphology on a single verb. These constructions express grammatical categories such as tense, aspect, mood, voice, and modality.

Periphrastic forms are widespread across languages. English uses auxiliary verbs to form tenses and aspects, as in I have eaten (present perfect), She is running (present progressive), and They will arrive (future). Spanish and Portuguese frequently employ near-future or future constructions with ir or estar plus an infinitive or gerund, as voy a comer or estoy comiendo. German uses werden as a future auxiliary: Ich werde gehen. In many languages, periphrasis also underlies evidential, modal, or habitual meanings.

Across typology, verbal periphrasis contrasts with synthetic inflection: the auxiliary partners with a participle, gerund, or infinitive rather than relying on the main verb’s endings alone. This analytic strategy often arises from grammaticalization, historical change, and cross-linguistic variation. Periphrastic constructions can increase flexibility in expressing time, aspect, and mood, and they frequently interact with word order and discourse context.
