Ventrikkelstrukturen refers to the ventricular system of the brain, a series of interconnected cavities filled with cerebrospinal fluid. This system plays a crucial role in the production, circulation, and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid, which acts as a protective cushion for the brain and spinal cord, helps maintain a stable internal environment, and transports nutrients and waste products.

The ventricular system consists of four main parts: the two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle. The lateral ventricles are the largest and are located within each cerebral hemisphere. Each lateral ventricle communicates with the third ventricle via a small opening called the interventricular foramen. The third ventricle is a narrow, midline cavity situated between the two thalami. It connects to the fourth ventricle through a long, narrow channel known as the cerebral aqueduct. The fourth ventricle is located in the hindbrain, dorsal to the pons and medulla oblongata. From the fourth ventricle, cerebrospinal fluid can exit into the subarachnoid space through three openings: one median aperture and two lateral apertures.

The choroid plexuses, specialized vascular tissues within the ventricles, are responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid then circulates through the ventricular system and eventually drains into the subarachnoid space, where it is reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Disruptions in the ventricular system, such as blockages in cerebrospinal fluid flow, can lead to conditions like hydrocephalus, characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fluid and increased intracranial pressure.
