Ventil syndrome, also known as "tredove functional pneumonia," or ventilator-associated pneumonia, (VAP) is a type of lung infection that can develop in patients who are undergoing mechanical ventilation. This type of lung infection is considered a common healthcare-associated infection and often occurs in intensive care units.

Mechanical ventilation involves the use of a machine to assist a patient in breathing by delivering breaths into their lungs. The process involves the insertion of a tube into the patient's airways, usually through the mouth or nose, and the use of a ventilator to control the delivery of oxygen and air to the patient's lungs. While mechanical ventilation can help patients who are unable to breathe on their own, certain factors can contribute to the development of lung infections, such as biofilm formation on endotracheal tubes, changes in humidity, temperature, and oxygen concentration, as well as the presence of various microorganisms.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia can affect patients who have been on mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours, and early indicators include fever, increased white blood cell count, decline in oxygenation status, and an increase in ventilator settings. Treatment of VAP may involve antibiotics to combat the infection, removal of the endotracheal tube, and sometimes the need to reduce positive end-expiratory pressure, improve humidification, or seamlessly transition to a non-invasive support.
