Ventilatsioone refers to the process of air exchange within a building or enclosed space. It involves either natural air movement or mechanical systems to introduce fresh outdoor air and remove stale indoor air. This exchange is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality, controlling humidity, and removing pollutants such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, and allergens.

Natural ventilation relies on pressure differences and temperature gradients. Open windows, doors, and vents allow air to flow in and out passively. This method is often simpler and more energy-efficient but can be less controllable and dependent on external weather conditions.

Mechanical ventilation systems, on the other hand, use fans to actively control the airflow. These systems can range from simple exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to complex whole-house ventilation systems that can also include heat recovery. Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) are advanced mechanical systems that pre-condition incoming fresh air using the energy from outgoing stale air, thus reducing heating and cooling loads. Proper ventilation is a key component of healthy building design, contributing to occupant comfort and well-being.
