Vektorimuuttujia, often translated as vector variables or vector quantities, are fundamental concepts in mathematics and physics that represent quantities possessing both magnitude and direction. Unlike scalar variables, which are defined solely by their numerical value, vector variables require a specification of both how much and in what direction.

In a geometric context, vectors are often depicted as arrows. The length of the arrow represents the magnitude, while the arrowhead indicates the direction. For example, velocity is a vector quantity; its magnitude is speed, and its direction specifies where an object is moving. Force is another common example; it has a strength and acts in a particular direction.

Mathematically, vectors can be represented in various ways. In a Cartesian coordinate system, a vector can be expressed as a tuple of numbers, corresponding to its components along each axis. For instance, a 2D vector might be written as (x, y), where x is the component along the x-axis and y is the component along the y-axis. In three dimensions, it would be (x, y, z).

Vector algebra provides rules for manipulating these quantities. Vector addition, for example, can be visualized using the parallelogram rule or the head-to-tail method, where the resultant vector represents the combined effect of two or more vectors. Scalar multiplication, on the other hand, scales the magnitude of a vector and can reverse its direction if the scalar is negative. Operations like the dot product and cross product are also defined for vectors, yielding scalar and vector results, respectively, with different physical interpretations.
