Vejning is the process of determining the mass of an object using a device such as a scale or balance. The result is typically expressed in grams or kilograms and is a fundamental measurement in many fields. In commerce, vejning allows pricing by weight; in science, it enables quantitative analyses; in medicine and industry, it supports dosing, formulation, and quality control.

Common instruments include balance scales (two-pan balances), spring scales, and digital scales that rely on load cells. Weighing typically involves placing the object on the scale, sometimes on a tare plate to subtract the container’s mass; zeroing the instrument before measurement helps remove residual weight. For accurate results, instruments are calibrated with known reference weights, and measurements are traceable to the International System of Units (SI).

Accuracy depends on several factors. Resolution and readability determine how finely a mass can be read. Zero error, drift, and mechanical wear affect reliability. Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, air currents, and vibrations can introduce error, as can buoyancy effects of air, particularly for precise or small masses. Proper procedure—stable placement, decontaminated or tare-adjusted containers, and appropriate calibration—minimizes such errors.
