Vegetation mosses are a diverse group of non-vascular land plants in the division Bryophyta. They are small, green, and form dense mats or cushions on soils, rocks, tree trunks, and other surfaces. Mosses are common in many ecosystems and contribute to vegetation structure by stabilizing soil, aiding in moisture retention, and serving as early colonizers in disturbed or shaded habitats.

Morphology and life form: Mosses have a dominant gametophyte generation, which appears as small leafy shoots. The leaves are typically simple and one cell layer thick, arranged around a stem-like axis. A dependent sporophyte rises from the gametophyte and consists of a stalk (seta) and a capsule that releases spores. Spores germinate into protonema filaments, which grow and give rise to new leafy gametophytes, completing the life cycle.

Reproduction and lifecycle: Mosses reproduce sexually via swimming sperm that travel to female reproductive structures called archegonia, requiring water for fertilization. The resulting sporophyte is often transient and relies on the gametophyte for nutrients. Spores disperse to form new moss gametophytes, enabling wide distribution across suitable habitats. Many mosses can also propagate vegetatively by fragmentation.

Ecology and distribution: Mosses occur worldwide and are especially diverse in moist, shaded environments such as forest floors, wetlands, and rocky outcrops. Peat-forming Sphagnum mosses play a crucial ecological role by trapping water and contributing to peat accumulation. Mosses influence soil formation, microhabitat availability for invertebrates and microorganisms, and they can act as bioindicators of air quality and environmental change. They are used in horticulture, ecological restoration, and traditional practices in some regions.
