Veenikanüül, often referred to as an intravenous (IV) cannula or line, is a short, slender tube that is inserted into a vein to provide access for administering fluids, medications, or blood products, or for drawing blood samples. It is a common medical device used in hospitals, clinics, and sometimes in home care settings.

The cannula typically consists of a needle, a plastic catheter (the tube), a removable stylet (needle), and a port or hub for connecting IV tubing. The needle, with its sharp point, is used to pierce the skin and vein wall. Once the vein is accessed, the needle is withdrawn, leaving the flexible plastic catheter in place within the vein. The catheter is then secured to the skin with adhesive tape or a dressing to prevent dislodgement.

Veenikanüül are available in various sizes, indicated by their gauge number, with lower numbers representing larger diameters. The appropriate size is chosen based on the intended use, such as the type of fluid to be infused or the size of the vein. They are generally inserted by trained healthcare professionals, such as nurses or doctors, using sterile techniques to minimize the risk of infection. The presence of a veenikanüül can cause some discomfort during insertion, but once in place, it is usually well-tolerated.
