Varttamismenetelmiä are techniques used in horticulture to join two plant parts, typically a scion and a rootstock, so that they grow together as a single plant. This process is known as grafting. The primary goal of grafting is to combine desirable traits from both the scion, which forms the upper part of the plant (fruits, flowers, or foliage), and the rootstock, which forms the lower part (roots). Different methods exist, chosen based on the species of plant, the desired outcome, and the time of year.

Common varttamismenetelmiä include whip and tongue grafting, cleft grafting, saddle grafting, and bud grafting (budding). Whip and tongue grafting is often used for young, actively growing plants and involves creating interlocking cuts on both the scion and rootstock. Cleft grafting is suitable for dormant plants and involves inserting the scion into a split in the rootstock. Saddle grafting is similar to whip and tongue but with a V-shaped cut on the rootstock and a corresponding cut on the scion. Bud grafting, or budding, involves transferring a single bud from the scion onto the rootstock. Successful grafting relies on precise cuts, ensuring good contact between the cambium layers of both plant parts, and proper protection to prevent drying out and infection. This technique is widely used for fruit trees, ornamental plants, and some vegetables to propagate varieties that do not come true from seed or to improve disease resistance, vigor, or fruit quality.
