Varmeoverføring, also known as heat transfer, is the study of thermal energy moving from one system to another. This movement occurs due to a temperature difference. There are three primary mechanisms by which heat transfer takes place: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact of particles. In solids, atoms vibrate and transfer energy to their neighbors. In liquids and gases, collisions between molecules are the primary means of conduction. This process is most efficient in materials with high thermal conductivity.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, which can be liquids or gases. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks. This creates a circulating current that distributes heat throughout the fluid. Natural convection occurs due to density differences, while forced convection involves external means like fans or pumps.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, such as infrared radiation. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium to travel and can occur through a vacuum. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit thermal radiation. The amount and type of radiation emitted depend on the object's temperature and surface properties. Understanding these modes of heat transfer is crucial in many scientific and engineering applications, from designing efficient heating and cooling systems to understanding weather patterns and the behavior of stars.
