Variolationspraxis refers to the historical practice of variolation, a method used to induce immunity against smallpox. This procedure involved deliberately infecting a healthy individual with material taken from a smallpox sore, typically from a mild case of the disease. The goal was to produce a less severe infection than naturally occurring smallpox, thereby conferring immunity.

The practice originated in Asia and spread to other parts of the world, including Africa and Europe, over centuries. In Europe, it gained prominence in the 18th century, though it was met with both enthusiasm and skepticism. Variolation was performed by trained practitioners and involved scratching or puncturing the skin, usually on the arm, and introducing the variolous material.

While variolation was effective in preventing or mitigating severe smallpox, it was not without risks. The induced infection could still be serious, and in some cases, it could lead to death or spread the disease to others. The mortality rate associated with variolation was considerably lower than that of naturally acquired smallpox, but it was still a significant concern.

Variolationspraxis was eventually superseded by vaccination, a safer method developed by Edward Jenner using cowpox to induce immunity to smallpox. Vaccination, with its lower risk profile, gradually replaced variolation as the primary method of smallpox prevention, leading to the eventual eradication of the disease in the late 20th century.
