Varianzzerlegung, also known as analysis of variance (ANOVA) in English, is a statistical method used to partition the observed total variance in a dataset into different components that can be attributed to various sources of variation. This technique is particularly useful for comparing the means of three or more groups. The core idea is to analyze the differences between group means in relation to the variability within each group.

The total variance in the data is decomposed into variance between groups and variance within groups. The variance between groups, often called the treatment variance or explained variance, measures the extent to which the means of the different groups differ from the overall mean. The variance within groups, also known as the error variance or unexplained variance, represents the variability of the observations within each individual group around their respective group means.

A key output of varianzzerlegung is the F-statistic, which is the ratio of the variance between groups to the variance within groups. A large F-statistic suggests that the differences between group means are statistically significant and unlikely to have occurred by chance.
