Varetage is a term used in several Nordic languages, notably Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, to describe the act of looking after, managing, or safeguarding someone else’s interests or affairs. As a verb, varetage means to assume responsibility for the welfare, protection, or administration of another person or matter on that person’s behalf. In formal use, the term can refer to both the act and the institution or authority by which responsibility is granted.

In legal and administrative contexts, varetage often denotes guardianship or administration. A person or institution may be appointed to varetage the affairs of someone who cannot manage them independently, such as a minor, an incapacitated adult, or a person lacking decision-making capacity.
