In public health, vannbåret sykdom or vannbåret smitte refers to illnesses caused by pathogens that enter the body through contaminated water. Transmission occurs via ingestion of drinking water or food prepared with contaminated water, and can result from inadequate water treatment, sanitation, or hygiene. Common agents include bacteria (Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella, Legionella), viruses (norovirus, hepatitis A), protozoa (Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium), and helminths.
