Vancomysiini is an antibiotic medication used to treat serious bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called glycopeptide antibiotics. Vancomysiini works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which ultimately leads to the death of the bacteria. It is primarily effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including strains that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Vancomysiini is typically administered intravenously for systemic infections. Oral administration is sometimes used for specific intestinal infections, such as those caused by Clostridium difficile. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's kidney function.

Common side effects of vancomysiini can include redness and itching at the injection site, fever, and chills. More serious side effects, though less common, may involve kidney damage, hearing loss, and a severe allergic reaction known as Red Man syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by flushing and rash, and can often be mitigated by slowing the rate of infusion.

Due to its potential for toxicity and the development of bacterial resistance, vancomysiini is generally reserved for infections that cannot be treated with other, safer antibiotics. Regular monitoring of blood levels is often necessary to ensure efficacy and minimize the risk of adverse effects.
