Valutastärkning, also known as currency appreciation, refers to an increase in the value of one currency relative to another. This means that a unit of the appreciating currency can buy more of the other currency than it could previously. For example, if the Euro strengthens against the US Dollar, one Euro would then be able to purchase a greater number of US Dollars.

Several factors can contribute to a valutastärkning. Changes in interest rates are a primary driver; higher interest rates in a country can attract foreign investment seeking better returns, thereby increasing demand for that country's currency and causing it to appreciate. Economic performance also plays a crucial role. A strong and stable economy, characterized by low inflation, low unemployment, and robust growth, generally leads to a stronger currency as it signals stability and opportunity to international investors.

Trade balances can also influence currency values. A country with a trade surplus, exporting more than it imports, experiences higher demand for its goods and services, which in turn increases demand for its currency. Conversely, political instability or economic uncertainty can lead to currency depreciation.

The effects of a valutastärkning are significant for both domestic and international economic actors. For consumers, imported goods become cheaper, potentially leading to lower inflation. However, domestic producers exporting goods face higher prices for their products in foreign markets, which can hurt their competitiveness and reduce export volumes. For tourists, traveling to a country whose currency has appreciated becomes more expensive.
