valtavaux

Valtavaux was a former municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It is situated in the western part of the canton, near the town of Moudon, and lies at an elevation of approximately 425 metres above sea level. The municipality covered an area of 3.12 square kilometres. As of 2005, its population was recorded at 452 residents, with a demographic composition typical of small Swiss rural communities: a mix of families, commuters, and a stable elderly population.

Historically, Valtavaux was first mentioned in medieval documents under the name "Valtava" in the 12th century. The local economy was traditionally based on agriculture, with emphasis on dairy farming and crop cultivation. In the late 20th century, the municipality began to attract small businesses in the service sector, supplementing the agrarian economy. The local church, dedicated to Saint Germain, is a notable landmark, reflecting the architectural styles of the late 18th century.

In 2012, the municipality underwent a territorial reorganization. On 1 January 2019, Valtavaux merged with the neighboring municipality of Val-Tournier to form the new municipality of Val-Tignier. This administrative change was part of a cantonal effort to streamline local governance and improve the delivery of public services. The merger brought together similar rural communities with shared infrastructure needs, such as transportation links and educational facilities.

Today, the site of the former Valtavaux municipality remains a residential area characterized by traditional Swiss wooden houses and a community garden. The local school serves children from both former municipalities, and the area continues to be noted for its picturesque landscapes and agricultural heritage.
