Valopöytä, often translated as light table or lightbox, is a translucent surface illuminated from beneath. Its primary function is to provide a bright, evenly lit area for viewing transparencies, X-rays, or for tracing images. Historically, light tables were used extensively in fields like graphic design, photography, and medical imaging before the advent of digital technology.

In graphic design and pre-press, artists would use valopöytiä to inspect film negatives and positives, or to transfer artwork by placing a drawing on top of a paper or transparency and tracing it. Photographers also employed them for examining slides and negatives. In medicine, light boxes are still commonly used to display and interpret X-ray films.

Modern valopöytiä are often thin, lightweight, and powered by LED lights, offering energy efficiency and a cooler operating temperature compared to older fluorescent models. They are available in various sizes, from small portable units for on-the-go use to large formats for professional applications. Beyond their traditional uses, they can also serve as a creative tool for artists, children's activities, and even for illuminating stained glass. The gentle, diffused light is also sometimes found to be soothing or beneficial for certain sensory needs.
