valoaalto

Valoaalto is the Finnish term for a light wave, the electromagnetic wave that carries energy as visible light and other wavelengths through space and matter.

Light waves are characterized by oscillating electric and magnetic fields that propagate perpendicularly to the direction of travel. In vacuum, they travel at approximately 299,792 kilometers per second; in media, speed is reduced by the refractive index. Wavelength determines color in the visible range; frequency is c/λ. Light can be polarized; it exhibits interference and diffraction.

The behavior of valoaallo is described by Maxwell's equations and the electromagnetic wave equation. The energy flux is described by the Poynting vector, and quantum mechanics introduces photons as quanta of energy E = hf, linking wave and particle pictures.

Applications of valoaalto span many fields, including communication via fiber optics, imaging and microscopy, spectroscopy, and devices such as lasers and LEDs. Its study underpins much of modern optics, photonics, and information technology.
