Valgendajaid (bleaching agents) are chemical substances used to whiten materials and remove color by oxidizing dye molecules and other color-causing compounds. They are widely used in households for laundry and cleaning, as well as in the textile, paper, and water-treatment industries to improve brightness, purity, and sanitary conditions.

Common types include chlorine-based bleaches, such as sodium hypochlorite, which are strong oxidizers and effective disinfectants; and oxygen-based bleaches, including hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate, and sodium perborate, which are typically gentler on fabrics and less likely to produce strong odors. Peracids like peracetic acid are used for sanitizing applications. The choice depends on material compatibility, desired whitening level, and safety considerations.

Mechanism and safety: bleaching agents oxidize chromophores—the chemical groups responsible for color—breaking bonds and removing color. They can be corrosive and irritate skin, eyes, and respiratory tissues. Do not mix bleaches with acids or ammonia, as dangerous gases can form; use with appropriate ventilation and protective equipment. Some agents can damage textiles, dyes, or metals if mishandled.

Environmental and storage notes: after use, oxidants degrade to simpler substances, but chlorine-based bleaches can form chlorinated byproducts; wastewater may impact aquatic life.
