Valency-altering, sometimes written as valence-altering, refers to chemical processes and reagents that change the valence state of an atom within a molecule. This change is usually described in terms of oxidation state and often accompanies a shift in bonding patterns or electron distribution. Valency alteration is a central idea in redox chemistry and in many catalytic and synthetic transformations, where adjusting the oxidation state of a center enables new reactivity.

Mechanisms of valency alteration include oxidation and reduction (electron transfer), as well as oxidative addition and reductive elimination in organometallic and catalytic cycles. In these contexts, metal centers frequently cycle between different oxidation states, such as Pd(0)/Pd(II) or Ni(I)/Ni(II), to enable bond formation and cleavage. Additionally, ligand exchange or activation steps can formally change a center’s valence without a net change in electron count, though the formal oxidation state may still be updated in bookkeeping.

Common examples involve reagents and processes that raise or lower oxidation state. Hypervalent iodine reagents can convert iodine from I(I) to higher valences such as I(III) or I(V), oxidizing substrates in the process. Permanganate, dichromate, and periodate are classic oxidants that increase the oxidation state of substrates, while chromium-based oxidants used in organic oxidation (for example PCC-type reagents) change the valence of the transition-metal or substrate species involved. In many catalytic systems, valence alterations are integral to the reaction mechanism and overall transformation.
