Vakuusominaisuudet, also known as vacuum properties, refer to the characteristics and behaviors of matter and energy when subjected to extremely low pressure environments, approaching a perfect vacuum. In such conditions, the typical interactions and phenomena observed in atmospheric pressure environments are significantly altered or cease to occur.

One of the primary vacuum properties is the behavior of gases. At low pressures, the mean free path of gas molecules increases considerably, meaning they travel further between collisions. This is a fundamental concept in vacuum technology. Different levels of vacuum, such as low vacuum, medium vacuum, high vacuum, and ultra-high vacuum, are defined by specific pressure ranges and are characterized by distinct molecular behaviors and the types of equipment required to achieve and maintain them.

Another important aspect of vacuum properties relates to heat transfer. In a vacuum, heat transfer by conduction and convection is eliminated because there are insufficient particles to carry thermal energy. Heat transfer can only occur through radiation. This principle is utilized in applications like vacuum insulation for thermos flasks and spacecraft thermal control.

Furthermore, vacuum environments can affect the physical and chemical properties of materials. For example, the boiling point of liquids decreases significantly in a vacuum, a phenomenon known as vacuum distillation. Many manufacturing processes, such as semiconductor fabrication and thin-film deposition, rely on vacuum properties to achieve precise control over material properties and prevent contamination. The absence of air molecules in a vacuum also prevents oxidation and other chemical reactions that occur in the presence of gases.
