Vakbélgyulladás, commonly known as appendicitis, is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine. The exact function of the appendix is not fully understood, but it is believed to play a role in the immune system or to act as a reservoir for beneficial gut bacteria.

The most common symptom of appendicitis is a sudden pain that begins on the right side of the lower abdomen. This pain often starts near the navel and then moves to the lower right abdomen. It may also begin around the navel and then shift. The pain typically worsens with movement, deep breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, and a general feeling of being unwell.

Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often by stool, a foreign object, or sometimes by infection or inflammation. This blockage can lead to bacterial overgrowth within the appendix, causing it to swell and become inflamed. If left untreated, the appendix can rupture, leading to a serious infection of the abdominal cavity called peritonitis.

Diagnosis of appendicitis usually involves a physical examination, blood tests to check for signs of infection, and imaging tests such as an ultrasound or CT scan. The standard treatment for appendicitis is surgical removal of the inflamed appendix, a procedure called an appendectomy. This can be performed either through open surgery or laparoscopically, a minimally invasive technique. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications.
