This process, known as electromagnetic induction, is the principle behind alternators, which are widely used in power plants. AC is the standard for electricity transmission and distribution worldwide due to its ability to be easily transformed to different voltage levels. This is achieved using transformers, which are crucial for efficiently transmitting electricity over long distances at high voltages to minimize energy loss and then stepping it down to safer, usable voltages for homes and businesses.

The frequency of AC, which is the number of cycles per second, is measured in Hertz (Hz). Common frequencies include 50 Hz and 60 Hz, depending on the region. The voltage and current in an AC circuit are constantly changing, and their effective values are often described using root mean square (RMS) values. AC systems are fundamental to modern electrical grids and power many devices and appliances we use daily.
