Vaihtosähköverkot, known in English as AC (alternating current) power grids, are the backbone of modern electricity distribution. They are systems designed to transmit and distribute electrical power generated by power plants to consumers. Unlike direct current (DC) systems, AC grids utilize alternating current, meaning the direction of the electric charge flow reverses periodically. This characteristic is crucial for efficient voltage transformation, a key advantage of AC systems.

The primary components of an AC power grid include generation facilities, transmission lines, substations, and distribution networks. Electricity is generated at power plants, typically using rotating generators driven by steam turbines, hydroelectric power, or wind turbines. This generated voltage is then stepped up to very high levels by transformers for long-distance transmission. High voltage reduces current, which in turn minimizes energy loss due to resistance in the transmission lines.

Substations play a vital role in AC grids. They house transformers that step down the voltage for local distribution. These substations also contain switching equipment to manage power flow and protect the system from faults. The distribution network then carries electricity at lower voltages to homes, businesses, and industries.

The ability to easily change voltage levels using transformers is the main reason AC systems became dominant over DC systems for power transmission. This flexibility allows for efficient long-distance transport of electricity and safe delivery to end-users. The frequency of the alternating current, typically 50 Hz or 60 Hz depending on the region, is standardized across the grid.
