Vahasylinteriä refers to a wax cylinder, an early sound recording and playback medium. Invented by Thomas Edison in 1877, it was a hollow cylinder covered in a layer of beeswax. A stylus, attached to a diaphragm, would vibrate when sound waves hit it, causing the stylus to etch a groove into the wax. The depth of the groove varied with the loudness of the sound, and the undulations of the groove corresponded to the pitch.
