It can be natural or synthetic and is applied to modify surface properties such as water repellence, gloss, and barrier performance.

Composition and formation

Vahakiht materials include natural waxes such as beeswax and carnauba, as well as paraffin and microcrystalline waxes. Edible film-forming substances like shellac or certain plant-derived wax blends are used for food-contact applications. The coating is typically applied as a thin film by dipping, spraying, brushing, or polishing and then cured or allowed to solidify. Depending on composition, the film can be waxy and translucent, with a range of hardness and melting points.

Properties

A vahakiht generally provides hydrophobicity and a barrier to moisture and gases, reducing dehydration and surface aging. It can enhance appearance with a glossy finish and, when food-grade, can serve as a edible or inert protective layer. The film’s performance depends on the wax type, thickness, and any additives, and it may soften or melt under heat.
