Vacuumactuated refers to a system or device that utilizes a vacuum to create motion or exert force. This method of actuation relies on the pressure difference between a low-pressure environment (the vacuum) and a higher-pressure environment, typically atmospheric pressure. When a vacuum is created within a sealed chamber, the higher external pressure pushes on surfaces, causing them to move or operate a mechanism.

A common example of vacuum actuation is found in vacuum cleaners, where a motor creates a vacuum that draws in dirt and debris. In industrial settings, vacuum grippers use suction to pick up and manipulate objects. These grippers consist of a flexible cup that forms a seal with the object's surface, and when a vacuum is applied, the atmospheric pressure outside the cup holds the object firmly.

Another application is in pneumatic systems, where vacuum actuators can be used for simple linear or rotational movements. This often involves a piston or diaphragm within a cylinder. When a vacuum is drawn on one side of the piston or diaphragm, the pressure difference causes it to move. Vacuum actuation is generally simpler and can be less expensive than hydraulic or electric actuation for certain tasks, particularly where precise force control is not the primary requirement. It is also often employed in applications where electrical power is undesirable or unavailable.
