Vaalipiirit, in Finnish electoral terminology, are the electoral districts used to elect Members of Parliament in Finland. They are the territorial units through which parliamentary elections are organized and seats are distributed among parties and candidates. Each vaalipiiri corresponds to a geographic area that contains multiple municipalities and communities.

There are thirteen parliamentary vaalipiirit in Finland, including the Åland Islands, which form their own district. The size and population of each vaalipiiri vary, and the number of seats allocated to a district roughly reflects its population. In practice, some districts have larger representation while others have fewer, with Åland currently electing a single representative. The boundaries and seat allocations are determined by law and are adjusted over time to maintain proportional representation as populations shift, typically following population assessments and demographic changes.

Voting and seat allocation within a vaalipiiri operate on an open-list proportional system. Voters cast their ballot for a specific candidate, and seats are allocated to parties and candidates within the district using the D’Hondt method. The ultimate MPs are chosen based on personal votes received within the party’s list, subject to the number of seats the party earns in that vaalipiiri. This structure aims to balance regional representation with overall proportionality across the country.
