A vaahdosammutin, often translated as foam extinguisher, is a type of fire extinguisher that uses a foam-based extinguishing agent. This foam is typically created by mixing water with a foaming agent, which is a concentrate designed to produce a stable foam. When the extinguisher is activated, the foam is expelled under pressure.

The primary mechanism of a foam extinguisher is to create a barrier between the fuel source and the oxygen in the air, thus suppressing combustion. The foam also has a cooling effect as it contains water, which further aids in extinguishing fires. Foam extinguishers are particularly effective on Class A fires (ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, and cloth) and Class B fires (flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, and paint). They can also be used on Class F fires (cooking oils and fats) in kitchens.

Unlike dry chemical extinguishers, foam extinguishers leave behind a residue. However, this residue is generally less corrosive and easier to clean up than dry chemical powder. It is important to note that foam extinguishers are not suitable for Class C fires (electrical fires) or Class D fires (combustible metals) due to the water content in the foam, which can conduct electricity or react dangerously with certain metals. Regular maintenance and inspection of a vaahdosammutin are crucial to ensure its readiness and effectiveness in case of a fire.
