Vöðvabrot, also known as muscle rupture or muscle tear, refers to a condition where muscle fibers are damaged. This can range from a mild strain, where only a few fibers are torn, to a complete rupture, where the muscle is separated into two pieces. Vöðvabrot typically occurs during strenuous physical activity, sudden movements, or direct trauma to the muscle. Athletes are particularly susceptible due to the high demands placed on their bodies.

The symptoms of vöðvabrot vary depending on the severity of the injury. Common signs include sudden, sharp pain at the time of injury, swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the affected area. In more severe cases, there may be a visible deformity or a loss of muscle function. The location of the vöðvabrot can also influence the symptoms; for instance, a calf muscle tear might make it difficult to walk.

Diagnosis of vöðvabrot usually involves a physical examination to assess the extent of the damage. Imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI can be used to confirm the diagnosis and visualize the extent of the muscle tear. Treatment for vöðvabrot depends on the severity and can include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). For minor tears, this may be sufficient. More severe tears might require physical therapy to regain strength and flexibility, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair the torn muscle fibers. Recovery time can vary significantly, from a few weeks for minor strains to several months for complete ruptures.
