Vélo, the French term for bicycle, refers to a two-wheeled, human-powered vehicle designed for efficient transport and recreation. It uses a frame, two wheels of equal size, a crank-driven drivetrain, and a steering system that allows the rider to balance and control the vélo.

Originating in the 19th century, the modern bicycle evolved from early velocipedes. The first practical two-wheeled device was the Laufmaschine, or draisine, devised by Baron Karl von Drais in 1817. Pedals were added in the 1860s in France, producing the velocipede. The ‘safety bicycle’ design with two equal-sized wheels, a chain drive, and a rear-wheel drive frame, developed in the 1880s, laid the groundwork for the contemporary bicycle.

Typical bicycles include a steel or aluminum frame, a front fork, wheels with pneumatic tires, a drivetrain (pedals, crankset, chain, gears), brakes (rim or disc), and steering components.

Road bikes are built for speed on paved roads; mountain bikes handle rough terrain; hybrids mix comfort and efficiency; touring bikes prioritize luggage capacity for long-distance trips; track bikes race on velodromes; BMX bikes perform stunts; electric bikes add motor assistance.

Bicycles are used for commuting, recreation, sport, and certain commercial tasks. They offer health benefits and can reduce traffic congestion and emissions. Maintenance includes regular tire inflation, chain lubrication, brake and gear adjustments, and periodic inspection of the frame and components.
