Vägförvaltningen is a term used for the government authority responsible for the road network in Sweden. Historically it referred to the state body Vägverket, which handled national road planning, construction, operation, maintenance and related traffic management. Since 2009, the role has been fulfilled by Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, which was formed by merging Vägverket with Banverket (the rail administration). In common usage, vägförvaltningen denotes the national level of road management, while local roads are typically managed by municipalities.

The main responsibilities of vägförvaltningen include long-term planning and development of the national road network, construction of major road projects, routine and winter maintenance, safety management, traffic information and incident response, and the setting of national standards for design, signage, and operations. The administration also coordinates with regional and municipal authorities to ensure a coherent road system and to implement national policy on transport, environment, and accessibility.

Organizationally, the Swedish road administration operates within the framework of Trafikverket. The agency plans and finances road projects, procures maintenance contracts, and supervises operations across the country. Financing comes from state budgets, capital investments, and, in some cases, EU funds or tolling arrangements as part of specific projects. The vägförvaltningen collaborates with municipalities, regional authorities, and other transport sectors to integrate road infrastructure with rail, maritime, and urban mobility strategies.
