Trafikverket

Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, is a government agency responsible for the long-term planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of Sweden's national transport infrastructure. Its remit covers the road and rail networks and related infrastructure and services that enable passenger and freight mobility.

It was established on 1 January 2010 through the merger of the Swedish Road Administration (Vägverket) and the Swedish Rail Administration (Banverket). The agency operates under the Government Offices and the Ministry of Infrastructure and reports to the government on transport policy and implementation.

The agency plans and prioritizes investments in roads and rails, builds and maintains the national infrastructure, and aims to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency in transport. It coordinates traffic information and works with municipalities, regional authorities, and other national agencies to align planning with environmental and climate goals. Trafikverket also produces data on traffic, travel times, and the condition of infrastructure and oversees procurement and project management for large construction and maintenance contracts.

The organization is led by a Director General and includes divisions focused on road, rail, planning and analysis, engineering, and support functions. It collaborates with other authorities responsible for transport safety and regulation to support coherent transport policy and administration.

Trafikverket plays a central role in Sweden's transport policy, shaping the development of the transport system to improve mobility, safety, and climate performance while supporting economic activity and regional development.
