Utsläppskanal is a term used in environmental engineering and regulation to describe the conduit through which pollutants or process emissions are released from a source into the environment. It covers physical channels such as chimneys, stacks, ventilation ducts, and outlet pipes, but also includes the immediate surroundings where the emissions enter the atmosphere, water, or soil. The channel comprises the outlet or access point, the transport medium (gas, liquid, vapor), and the receiving environment, and its design, integrity and operation determine how emissions are dispersed, diluted, or transformed before reaching people or ecosystems.

In practice, utsläppskanal is central to regulatory permitting, monitoring and modeling. Facilities must report emissions, install monitoring equipment where required, and ensure the channel does not bypass controls. Emission limits, sampling, continuous monitoring, and dispersion modeling are used to assess impact. Common examples include a smokestack releasing exhaust gases, an effluent pipe discharging treated wastewater, and a ventilation exhaust emitting volatile compounds.

Challenges include leaks, corrosion, bypass procedures, and fugitive emissions from valves and seals. Proper design and maintenance—such as leak-tight connections, abatement devices (scrubbers, filters), and wastewater treatment—are essential to minimize unintended releases. The concept is important for air quality management, water quality protection, and climate-related reporting, and is often addressed in environmental impact assessments and facility permits.
