In simple utsetningar, a single subject and predicate work together to express a complete thought. For example, "Hun leser en bok" translates to "She is reading a book." Compound utsetningar combine two or more independent clauses, often connected by coordinating conjunctions such as "og" (and), "men" (but), or "eller" (or). An example is "Jeg liker kaffe, men hun foretrekker te," which means "I like coffee, but she prefers tea."

Complex utsetningar involve at least one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses, which cannot stand alone as complete sentences. These are often connected by subordinating conjunctions like "fordi" (because), "når" (when), or "hvis" (if). For instance, "Jeg går hjem fordi jeg er trøtt" translates to "I am going home because I am tired."

Utsetningar can also be classified based on their purpose. Declarative sentences make a statement, such as "Det regner" (It is raining). Interrogative sentences ask a question, like "Hva heter du?"
