Utgangsmatching, or output matching, is the design and adjustment of networks that connect a source to a load to ensure that the impedances are matched at the connection point. In RF and microwave engineering, the objective is to maximize power transfer and minimize reflections on the transmission line, which improves efficiency and reduces standing waves. Matching is typically specified by the reflection coefficient or VSWR; ideal matching yields a reflection coefficient of zero and a VSWR of one.

Common approaches use passive components such as inductors and capacitors arranged as L-, Pi-, or T-networks, or transformer-based matching. Quarter-wave transformers can provide exact transformation at a single frequency, while multi-section networks extend bandwidth. Designers use Smith charts or modern circuit simulators to visualize impedance trajectories and to select component values that transform the source impedance to the load impedance at the operating frequency. Practical designs must account for parasitics, losses, and the frequency dependence of components.

Output matching is critical in transmitter stages, power amplifiers, and antenna interfaces, where an improper match can reduce transmitted power, increase harmonics, or cause instability. In many systems a 50-ohm reference is used, but the target impedance depends on the source and load. Matching networks are typically validated with network analyzers and time-domain measurements to confirm reflection, gain, and efficiency across the intended bandwidth.

Historically, impedance matching has been central to RF design since the early days of telecommunication; the Smith chart remains a common visual tool for designing and analyzing matching networks.
