Undervalleys are a geographical landform characterized by a valley situated below the surrounding terrain. This feature is often the result of geological processes that have lowered the land within the valley floor relative to the adjacent uplands. While the term "undervalley" is not a formally defined geological term in the same way as "canyon" or "rift valley," it is used descriptively to indicate this specific topographic configuration.

The formation of undervalleys can occur through several mechanisms. Subsidence, where the ground level drops, is a common cause. This can be due to natural processes like the dissolution of underlying soluble rock (karst topography), leading to sinkholes and collapsed underground structures that form lower depressions. Tectonic activity, such as faulting that causes a block of land to drop, can also create undervalleys. Erosion plays a significant role as well; prolonged weathering and removal of rock and soil by water or wind can deepen and lower a valley floor over geological timescales. In some instances, glacial activity can carve out valleys that are later modified to appear as undervalleys through subsequent deposition or erosion.

The appearance of an undervalley can vary greatly depending on its scale and the geological context. They can range from small depressions to extensive low-lying areas. Their presence can influence local hydrology, drainage patterns, and the distribution of flora and fauna, often creating distinct microclimates.
