Ummistumise is the Estonian term for the process or state of occlusion or blockage, meaning that a passage, opening or conduit becomes obstructed. It is used across disciplines to describe reduced or stopped flow caused by physical material, swelling, deposition, or biofilm. The word derives from the verb ummistuma, “to become blocked,” with the noun form ummistumine or umistus denoting the blockage itself.

In medicine, ummistumine refers to occlusion of vessels, airways, ducts or lumens. Common mechanisms include thrombus formation, atherosclerotic plaque, edema, or external compression. Clinical consequences include ischemia, organ dysfunction, or failure of drainage. In engineering and infrastructure, ummistumine describes clogging of pipes, filters, drains or channels by mineral scale, sediment, hair, biofilm, or other deposits. Prevention relies on filtration, regular cleaning, and design choices that minimize deposition; remediation involves mechanical cleaning, flushing, or chemical cleaners where safe and appropriate.

In environmental sciences and agriculture, clogging of soil pores, irrigation channels or drainage systems reduces permeability and aeration and can contribute to waterlogging or salinization if not managed.
