UMIST, or the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, was a public research university in Manchester, England. It specialised in science, engineering, and technology, tracing its origins to 19th-century technical education in the city, including the Manchester Mechanics' Institute and the Manchester Municipal College of Technology. Through the 20th century it developed as an autonomous institution, awarding degrees in engineering, the physical sciences, computing, and related disciplines.

On 1 October 2004, UMIST merged with the Victoria University of Manchester to form the University of Manchester, combining the two historic campuses and the assets of both institutions. The UMIST identity was retired, and its faculties were incorporated into the University of Manchester, with many continuing under the university's engineering, science, and computer science departments.

The former UMIST campus lies on the Oxford Road corridor near Manchester's city centre and remains part of the university's overall campus network, housing research laboratories and teaching facilities.

UMIST's legacy includes contributions to technical education and research in the region, and its history is reflected in the current structure and strengths of the University of Manchester's STEM disciplines.
