Ultraäänianturi, also known as an ultrasonic sensor, is a device that uses sound waves to measure distance. It works by emitting a burst of ultrasonic sound pulses and then measuring the time it takes for these pulses to return after bouncing off an object. The sensor then calculates the distance to the object based on the speed of sound and the time elapsed.

These sensors are commonly used in a wide range of applications. In industrial settings, they are employed for level measurement in tanks, detecting the presence of objects on conveyor belts, and for automated processes. In automotive technology, ultrasonic sensors are integral to parking assist systems, helping drivers detect obstacles and gauge distances to surrounding vehicles and objects. They are also used in robotics for navigation and obstacle avoidance, allowing robots to move safely in their environment.

The principle behind their operation is simple yet effective. The sensor contains a transducer that acts as both a transmitter and receiver. When a voltage is applied, it vibrates and produces high-frequency sound waves, typically above the range of human hearing. These waves travel through the air or other medium until they encounter an object. The sound waves then reflect off the object and travel back to the sensor. The transducer detects these returning waves, and the time-of-flight is measured. By knowing that the speed of sound in air is approximately 343 meters per second, the distance can be calculated using the formula: distance = (speed of sound * time of flight) / 2. The division by two accounts for the round trip the sound wave makes.
