While the term is most famously associated with journal impact factors, the underlying concept applies more broadly. In essence, a törmäyskerroin quantifies the degree to which something has been "hit" or interacted with by other elements within a system.

For journals, the impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations a journal received in a given year to articles published in that journal during the previous two years by the total number of citable articles published in the journal during those same two years.
