Törmäyskertoimet, or impact factors, are a common metric used in various fields, particularly in science and academia, to assess the relative importance or influence of a publication, a journal, or even an individual's work. While the term is most famously associated with journal impact factors, the underlying concept applies more broadly. In essence, a törmäyskerroin quantifies the degree to which something has been "hit" or interacted with by other elements within a system.

For journals, the impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations a journal received in a given year to articles published in that journal during the previous two years by the total number of citable articles published in the journal during those same two years. A higher törmäyskerroin suggests that articles published in that journal are frequently cited by other researchers, indicating perceived influence and relevance within its field.

However, törmäyskertoimet are not without their critics. They can be influenced by various factors, including the size of the research field, publication practices, and the self-citation habits of journals. Reliance solely on törmäyskertoimet for evaluating research quality can lead to a narrow focus on high-impact journals and may not accurately reflect the true value or originality of individual research contributions. Therefore, while törmäyskertoimet offer a quantitative measure, they should be interpreted with caution and considered alongside other qualitative assessments.
