Töredezettségmentesítés is a Hungarian term that translates to defragmentation in English. It is a process of reorganizing data stored on a hard disk drive to improve access speeds. Over time, as files are created, modified, and deleted, they can become fragmented, meaning pieces of a single file are scattered across different locations on the disk. This fragmentation can lead to slower read and write operations because the disk drive's read/write head has to move to multiple locations to access all the necessary data for a file.

The defragmentation process aims to consolidate these scattered file fragments into contiguous blocks. By placing related data together, the read/write head can access files more efficiently, reducing the time it takes to open them and improving overall system performance. This is particularly noticeable with older mechanical hard drives, where physical movement of the read/write head is a significant factor in performance.

Modern operating systems often include built-in defragmentation tools that can be run manually or scheduled to run automatically. While the impact of defragmentation is less pronounced on Solid State Drives (SSDs) due to their different data access mechanisms, it is still a relevant concept for traditional hard disk drives.
