Tõestusmeetodid refer to the various techniques and logical frameworks employed to establish the truth or validity of a mathematical statement or proposition. In mathematics, a proof is a sequence of logical deductions that demonstrate the truth of a statement based on axioms, definitions, and previously proven theorems. The rigor of a mathematical proof is paramount, ensuring that the conclusion is inescapable and universally true within the defined system.

Several fundamental proof methods exist. Direct proof involves starting with the given conditions and proceeding through a series of logical steps to arrive at the desired conclusion. This is often the most straightforward approach. Proof by contradiction, also known as indirect proof or reductio ad absurdum, assumes the negation of the statement one wishes to prove and then demonstrates that this assumption leads to a logical inconsistency or contradiction. Since the negation leads to falsehood, the original statement must be true.

Proof by contrapositive is another common technique. To prove a statement of the form "If P, then Q," one proves its contrapositive, "If not Q, then not P." This is logically equivalent to the original statement. Mathematical induction is a powerful method used to prove statements about all natural numbers. It involves establishing a base case (proving the statement for the first natural number, usually 0 or 1) and then proving an inductive step, which shows that if the statement holds for an arbitrary natural number k, it must also hold for k+1. Exhaustive proof or proof by exhaustion involves checking all possible cases to demonstrate that the statement is true for every instance. Finally, constructive proof provides an explicit construction or example that demonstrates the truth of a statement, whereas non-constructive proof may show existence without providing a specific instance. The choice of proof method often depends on the nature of the statement being proved.
