Täyttöalueiden refers to areas designated for the disposal of waste materials. In Finland, these sites are commonly known as kaatopaikat or jätteenkäsittelyalueet. The primary purpose of a täyttöalue is to receive and contain waste in a manner that minimizes environmental impact. Modern landfills are engineered facilities designed with specific features to manage waste safely.

Key components of a täyttöalue include liners, which are impermeable layers at the bottom and sides to prevent leachate, a toxic liquid produced by decomposing waste, from contaminating soil and groundwater. Leachate collection systems are installed to capture this liquid, which is then treated. Gas collection systems are also crucial, as decomposition produces landfill gas, primarily methane and carbon dioxide. This gas can be captured and used as an energy source or flared to reduce its greenhouse gas potential.

The selection and operation of täyttöalueiden are subject to strict environmental regulations. These regulations cover aspects such as site selection, design, waste acceptance criteria, monitoring, and closure. After a landfill reaches its capacity, it is covered with soil and vegetation, and long-term monitoring is conducted to ensure environmental protection continues. The trend in waste management is to reduce the reliance on landfills through increased recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy processes.
