Tähtiluokitus, or stellar classification, is a system used in astronomy to categorize stars based on their spectral characteristics. The most widely used classification scheme is the Morgan-Keenan system, which was developed in the early 20th century. This system classifies stars into seven main spectral types, each further divided into ten subclasses, ranging from 0 to 9. The spectral types are designated by the letters O, B, A, F, G, K, and M, in order of decreasing surface temperature.

The O-type stars are the hottest and most massive, with surface temperatures exceeding 30,000 Kelvin. They are rare and often found in multiple star systems. B-type stars are also hot and massive, with surface temperatures ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 Kelvin. A-type stars have surface temperatures between 7,500 and 10,000 Kelvin and are known for their strong hydrogen absorption lines. F-type stars have surface temperatures between 6,000 and 7,500 Kelvin and are similar to the Sun in size and luminosity. G-type stars, like the Sun, have surface temperatures between 5,200 and 6,000 Kelvin. K-type stars have surface temperatures between 3,700 and 5,200 Kelvin and are orange in color. M-type stars are the coolest and least massive, with surface temperatures below 3,700 Kelvin and a reddish appearance.

In addition to the spectral type, stars are also classified by their luminosity class, which indicates their size, brightness, and evolutionary stage. The luminosity classes range from 0 to VII, with 0 representing supergiants and VII representing white dwarfs. The luminosity class is indicated by a Roman numeral following the spectral type, such as G2V for a yellow main-sequence star like the Sun.
