The core components of a távhrendszer include the heat generation plant, insulated underground pipes for transporting hot water or steam, and substations within buildings that receive the heat and distribute it to individual units. The hot medium travels from the central plant through supply pipes and returns to be reheated through return pipes, creating a closed loop.

The primary advantages of távhrendszerek include improved energy efficiency, as central generation can often achieve higher efficiencies than individual building heating systems. They can also lead to reduced emissions by consolidating pollution sources and allowing for the use of cleaner fuels or waste heat. Furthermore, távhrendszerek can enhance reliability and reduce maintenance burdens for individual consumers.

However, távhrendszerek also have drawbacks. The initial investment for constructing the extensive pipe network can be substantial. Operational costs, including energy losses during transport and maintenance of the infrastructure, are also factors.
