Typpipõrjien, often translated as nitrogen fixation, is a crucial biological process that converts atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonia (NH3). This conversion is essential because most organisms cannot directly utilize the abundant nitrogen in the air. Nitrogen is a vital nutrient for all living things, as it is a key component of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

The primary mechanism for typpipõrjien occurs through specialized microorganisms, particularly bacteria. These bacteria, known as nitrogen-fixing bacteria, possess the enzyme nitrogenase, which catalyzes the reduction of N2 to NH3.
