Tympanostomirør, also known as grommets or ventilation tubes, are small, hollow cylinders inserted into the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear. They are typically made of plastic or silicone and come in various shapes and sizes. The primary purpose of tympanostomirør is to treat or prevent recurrent middle ear infections (otitis media) and to resolve fluid accumulation behind the eardrum (otitis media with effusion).

The insertion of tympanostomirør is a common surgical procedure performed by an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor). It is usually done under local or general anesthesia. A small incision is made in the eardrum, and the grommet is inserted into this opening. The tube then allows air to enter the middle ear, equalizing pressure and preventing fluid buildup.

Tympanostomirør are generally well-tolerated. Common side effects can include temporary ear discomfort, minor bleeding, or a discharge from the ear. In some cases, the grommet may fall out prematurely, or the hole in the eardrum may not close on its own after the grommet is removed. Most grommets are designed to extrude from the eardrum on their own within 6 to 18 months. If they do not fall out naturally, they can be removed surgically.
